FREE: Water reuse - Calculating energy demand in membrane technology
Course overview
When water is scarce − as is the case in many arid regions of the world − the only available options for water supply are seawater desalination and wastewater reuse. Both of these make extensive use of membrane technologies, and both have key design and operating parameters which define their performance and, ultimately, their cost. So what are the energy implications for using these technologies?
This course is directed at undergraduates with an interest in water reuse but who have no direct experience of the water industry. You are not expected to have any engineering knowledge but you must be ready to perform calculations as you work through the videos and mathematical equations in this course.
This four-hour short course is an online, on-demand course developed by ourselves but offered on The Open University's learning platform OpenLearn Create. You will need to create an account with The Open University to access the course. This course is provided by Judd Water and Wastewater Consultants as a free resource in accordance with our aim to promote wider understanding of membrane bioreactor technology and wastewater treatment.
What is covered?
In this course, you start by looking at the fundamental relationships governing flow and pressure in water systems, building to a complete determination of energy consumption for both process options − seawater desalination and wastewater reuse.
Course outcomes
At the end of the course the delegates will have:
- a basic understanding of membrane processes, and
- an appreciation of energy consumption when applying membrane technologies for seawater desalination and wastewater reuse.
Please note this is a third-party website and you will be required to create an account. We would appreciate you leaving a review of the course on completion.
“For more than a decade, Ovivo has been holding national MBR operator workshops. Every year we invite a guest speaker and there is none better than Professor Judd. His dry wit keeps the crowd engaged and his extensive knowledge of the subject matter proved extremely valuable. Based on feedback from participants, Professor Judd's approach to presenting, mixing research with field data, was well received and effective.”Dennis Livingston Director, MBR Systems, Ovivo (USA)
